40 CENTESIMI


The difference between the first and the second type is very simple. The first type has the"0" of "40" large while in the second type it is narrow. The first type shows up 52 times in the sheet while the second one is present only 20 times.
Here below is represented a rare couple (position 59 and 60) showing to the left the sample with the "0" large and to the right the sample with the "0" narrow (Fig. 1).

It's worth to be mentioned also a sample in the position 64 that has the value 40 slightly different from the others ("0" is bigger and squared,"4' is more vertical).
This piece presents in addition always a small diagonal color trait in the lower right label.
In the trial composition made before the printing, in its place, by mistake, a stereotype of the 25 centesimi originally has been inserted; its number has therefore been re-shaped, changing it into a "40". I don't have of my own a real sample to show here and therefore I will present a reproduction(Fig. 2).
